Wilson A. Bentley took his first successful photomicrograph of a snow crystal when he was nineteen years old. He went on to capture over 5000 such images during his lifetime. He published a monograph entitled Snow Crystals , illustrated with 2500 photographs, and authored the entry on “snow” in the 14th Edition Encyclopædia Britannica. He died of pneumonia on Dec. 23, 1931, after walking six miles in a blizzard in order to photograph more snowflakes.
